The Man Who Would Be Clark Gable
By Robert Conover
The casting directors did not look very far to cast the bio-flick of Hollywood's greatest lover, The Clark Gable Story. They chose Nick Carroll who had doubled for Gable in many of his movies including The Misfits when the star did not do his own stunts. In the Arthur Miller-penned movie, Gable, encouraged by Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift, tames wild mustangs. He died of a heart attack shortly after the film was completed.
Previewers of the Clark Gable Story were boffo with special kudos for Carroll in the title role.
Shortly before the theatrical release, Nick Carroll died in a car accident in his new car: a Ford Mustang.
