Mr. May

Mr. May was a successful lawyer with a part-time avocation of counseling troubled boys. He was Perry Mason with a good measure of Father Flanagan. He helped me, Tony Caruso, more than he ever knew. I wasn't on a wayward bus, I was in a streetcar when there were no more streetcars. To Desire or any place else.
Mr. May also got me my first job. I became a message runner and subpoena server for him. Then with his encouragement, I took the civil service test and became the junior custodian for the Detroit Public Library's automotive collection. Perfect for a kid who loves cars.
Oh yes, Mr. May even took his second car out of storage and gave it to me. A three-year-old Studebaker Silver Hawk. I still have it. I'm picking up Mr. May for lunch today.
My treat.
